Why are many people missing one of the simplest things they can do to go green?
There is one simple switch that people can make which will help protect nature and cut carbon emissions, but it is seldom mentioned. We dig into the subject.
UK missing out on opportunity to copy successful French green business
New UK legislation to be introduced in April 2025 will require businesses and institutions to sort food waste for separate collection. What would be the ideal way for this material to be collected and treated? We travelled to Paris to see a successful small business, Les Alchimistes, who are well ahead of the game. If it works in France, why not test the concept in Newcastle as part of our Enrich the Earth project?
Is it time for us to become a nation of sustainable gardeners?
The Enrich the Earth campaign, developed by Sizzle, has been running for around 15 months. For me, it has been a crash-course in learning about an entirely new sector. Through this insight, my view of gardening and growing has changed. My previous view was that it was a wholesome activity delivering some environmental and health benefits. But when I have dug deeper behind the headlines, I have realised that the picture is not quite as rosy…
Our Spring Update
The North Earth of England is the focal point of activities for Enrich the Earth. Our Project Director Simon Blackhurst shares what we’ve been up to so far, and what’s coming next.
Why has the UK not got a national soil strategy?
Soil is the source of 95% of our food and holds about three times as much carbon as the atmosphere. The UK’s soil stores the equivalent of 80 years of annual greenhouse gas emissions. So, where is our strategy to protect it?
A dirty big hole in the UK’s circular economy strategy
New research commissioned by Sizzle Innovation as part of the Enrich the Earth campaign has revealed a gaping hole in the UK’s strategy to protect our natural capital and promote the circular economy.

What next for Enrich the Earth?
Following our September 2023 launch, we have set ourselves five targets to help ease the transition to peat free, create systemic change and spark a composting revolution.
Are we on track to stop using peat in horticulture?
Our founder Trewin Restorick summarises the RHS Transition to Peat-Free Survey report, providing a clear insight into the challenges facing the horticulture sector and what we can do next.
